AROUND THE CREEK
Starkweather Drive Project Information
In 2009 an Eagle Scout and a Starkweather Creek
neighbor approached Friends of Starkweather Creek (FSC) about doing
a project. We decided that removing invasive species such as burdock
and replacing them with native vegetation along Starkweather Drive
would be a good project. We worked with City of Madison staff to
set the project guidelines. The scouts went door to door in the
neighborhood with information about their project and FSC shared
the project with the Eastmorland Neighborhood Association.
The scouts did a great job removing the invasive
species in 2009. They also received many donations of native plants.
Temporary fencing was placed around the delicate new plants to protect
them from rabbits and lawnmowers. Woodchips covered newspaper to
reduce new weed growth.
This spring their work is already sprouting. The
first plants to arrive are bloodroot. Watch for their white flowers.
We are excited to see what will bloom next.
FSC and neighbors will be continuing this work in 2010.
