Friends of Starkweather Creek (FSC) was started in February 2002 by a group of concerned citizens who wanted to promote the rejuvenation of Starkweather Creek.  Over the years, FSC has organized creek clean-ups and celebrations to raise awareness and pride in the creek.  We also actively advocate for responsible development in the watershed and for commitments from city government to improve the creek.

As you think about summer plans, consider visiting your local Starkweather Creek for a paddle or “like” our Facebook page to keep up with FSC happenings.

June 19 - August 14:

Goodman Summer Camp

What happens when you mix a group of 10 Goodman students (3rd-5th graders) in a summer camp club and show them a Watershed in their neighborhood? Friends of Starkweather Creek (FSC), with a few of its volunteers and the help of Deborah Crabtree and Shaheen Sutterwala (Goodman staff) will find out come June 19 through August 14th (excluding July 3rd). For two hours on these Fridays, the students will create and document their diverse guided experiences to learn more about nature in their neighborhood. FSC's volunteers plan on sharing their knowledge of the watershed with these interested students. Their final product will be presented at FSC annual meeting in October.

Starkweather Creek Cleanup on May 2, 2015

The Friends spring clean-up on Saturday, May 2, had about 19 volunteers show up at the two sites, the Olbrich boat launch and near Highway 30. Rhonda Martin and Carl Landsness helped set up and manage our table at the Olbrich boat launch. Special thanks to Alan Ausel, who manned the information table and helped volunteers at the Hwy 30 site (where he did creek monitoring last year). And thank you to Nik Simonson from Dane County Lakes and Watershed who brought us gloves, garbage bags, litter grabbers and t-shirts to help our efforts.

Junk

We picked out quite a bunch of junk at the Hwy 30 site - a Woodman's grocery cart, a car seat, three tires, a box spring and 12 bags of trash. At the Olbrich site a couple of tough volunteers hauled out a giant piece of landscape cloth (about 5 by 30 feet), a tire and some metal poles.  We had people on shore and in canoes picking up trash.  Along the way it was fun to admire many turtles basking in the sun!

 Badger Volunteers

The official spring clean-up was preceded on Friday by a Badger Volunteers clean up of the North Plat. John Imes, Executive Director, Wisconsin Environmental Initiative, headed up the effort. John reported that they did the entire North plat and left 9 bags of garbage from their efforts.

Thanks so much to everyone who helped out!

FSC Summer Happenings

Paddle the Creek

Upstream from Olbrich Gardens, turn left at the confluence and the West Branch will take you through woods, under many bridges, and you will  enjoy a surprisingly quiet paddle full of local wildlife. During our clean-up event on May 2 we saw a huge number of turtles and fish. Check out pictures from the clean-up on our Facebook page.

June 21: Summer Solstice

FSC will provide canoes for people to use for a short paddle on the creek from 4-7pm.  The Friends will have an information booth including hands-on activities showing how we monitor creek health, including a good look at the BUGS!! The bonfire will once again be in Olbrich Park.  Come join the festivities at this iconic eastside event.

July 26: Atwood Fest

Learn more about Starkweather Creek at our table.  In the meantime, join our Facebook page to keep updated on our events.

August (TBA): Creek Tour

Bring your canoe or kayak and join us on a tour of the creek.  FSC board members will be there to point out the sights.  If you don’t have a canoe or kayak, email us at info@starkweatherfriends.org and we’ll arrange boats for you.

October 15: Annual Meeting

Attend this event at the Olbrich Gardens and learn more about us! We’ll provide snacks and an entertaining program.  Mark your calendar now!
